About the Forum
We are pleased to announce that we are organizing the International Forum for Outstanding Overseas Young Scholars in May, 2017 at the School of Urban and Regional Science, East China Normal University in Shanghai, China. The objective of this forum is to increase the visibility of urban and regional science frontiers in China and to develop a stronger research network for top level international scholars and East China Normal University colleagues. Through seminars, discussion sessions, inspections, etc., the forum aims to enhance outstanding international and Chinese scholars’ acquaintance with School of Urban and Regional Science, East China Normal University and Shanghai.

Requirements for applicants
We welcome applicants with expertise in one or more of the following areas:
Urban Geography, Economic Geography, Regional Geography, Human Geography, Transportation Geography, Environmental Geography, Regional Economics, Geopolitics, Science & Technological Innovation, Urban and Rural Planning, etc.
And meet one of the following qualifications: Under 35 years old (under 40 for Ph.D. in Human and Social Sciences), Ph.D. degree from an accredited overseas institution, or a doctoral degree from a Chinese institution with a minimum of three consecutive years of experience working in a professional capacity in an overseas institution. Applicants holding an overseas Ph.D. degree with outstanding publication records and academic achievements are encouraged to apply.
Have obtained formal positions in well-known overseas institutions, such as accredited universities, research institutions/organizations and enterprises/agencies, and with breakthrough achievements and important influences in the above research areas.
Travel and Accommodation
All invited participants need to book and pay for their own air tickets. For participants from the U.S. and European countries, the forum organizer will provide up to 12,000 RMB Yuan of international travel reimbursement. For those from other countries and regions, 6,000 RMB Yuan will be available for international travel reimbursement. The transportation reimbursement for participants from China will be in accordance with relevant state laws. The forum organizer will offer board and lodging during the forum free of charge.
School Profile
East China Normal University is a comprehensive public research university located in Shanghai, China. It was formed in 1951 by the merger of the Great China University founded in 1924 and Kwang Hua University (est. 1925). Its original role was to train teachers for secondary and higher education, as suggested in the name "Normal", but very soon housed top-class researchers and evolved into an elite research-intensive university. ECNU is often considered to be one of the most prestigious universities in China and is internationally recognized with institutional partnerships worldwide. Sponsored by the national program "Project 211" and "Project 985", the university is a staunch force in the nation's research and innovation, and is reputed to be the "Columbia of the East". It aims to become a first-class university in the world around the middle of this century.
The School of Urban & Regional Science at East China Normal University is a research and teaching entity focused on human geography and regional economics. The school includes doctoral and master's degree programs in human geography and regional economics. It owns the first doctoral and master's program in human geography approved by the state, which is authenticated as the key discipline by the national and Shanghai municipal governments. The comprehensive research capacity is leading in the nation. The school’s regional economics doctoral and master's degree programs primarily rely on our research advantages in economic geography and have formed distinctive features in multiple research areas.
The school consists of the department of Urban Geography, the department of Regional Geography and the department of Economic Geography. It also includes several key research institutes. The Institute for Innovation and Strategic Studies is one of the Key Strategic Research Centers approved by the Ministry of Education. The Institute for Yangtze River Delta Interaction is one of Shanghai Social Science Innovation Research Bases. The Institute for Modern Chinese City Studies, including the Center of China administration division and the Shanghai Soft Science Research Base on the U.S. innovation and development, national and provincial recognized research bases, is a key research institute in Humanities and Social Sciences of Ministry of Education.
